“Wednesday is the new Friday!” says 32-year-old Lauren Bennett, one of many partiers on the dance floor at Teqa’s anniversary bash that featured a happy- and healthy-looking Nick Cannon as guest DJ.
It's been a year since Teqa opened its tequileria/taqueria in Murray Hill, a neighborhood that's become quite the foodie and nightlife mecca, with Teqa being a bit of both. Overseen by owner Derek Axelrod, who also founded French Conenction, the medium-sized resto-lounge is also something of a celebrity haunt, having hosted the likes of Cee-Lo Green, Snooki and former NFL player Warren Sapp as well as parties for Howard Stern and Real New York Housewife Kelly Bennsimon.
To celebrate their first birthday, Axelrod closed Teqa to the public on Leap Year night from 7 to 10 p.m. and lavished guests with free food and drink. The bash commenced with small talk among a composed crowd. However, as soon as the music began to overpower the chatter, the number of people and internal energy surged.
The stylish crowd (including Mob Wives' Drita Davanzo) became even more energized when Axelrod friend and supporter Cannon stepped into the DJ booth. Though recently hospitalized due with acute kidney failure, which led to his recent departure from 92.3 Now (he was the New York radio station's morning show host), he appeared to be on the mend. Cannon launched into his set with Michael Jackson's "Rock With You"; soon after, he slowed things down with the late Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," before sticking to mostly R&B favorites like Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison."
Another highlight was the extensive cocktail menu, which included Teqa's popular Spicy Cucumber and Hibiscus & Rose margaritas. Servers, meanwhile, provided a variety of appetizers in a continuous stream passing. Mini quesadillas (mushroom, chicken, and cheese); mini chips and salsa/guacamole bites; mini tacos of short ribs, carne asada, and pollo; and dessert trays were whipped up in Teqa’s kitchen throughout the night.
