When District 36 opened in late 2010, it made a lot of noise...literally. District's secret weapon is its monster speaker system. Designed by the same firm responsible for London's legendary Ministry of Sound, it's a magnet for house and techno deejays like onetime Sound Factory star Jonathan Peters, who's in residence at District on Fridays and Saturdays. The venue's simple, one-room layout provides dance-music patrons with a stripped-down, straight-up club experience. In 2011, District was nominated for Best New Club in Paper Magazine's 7th Annual Nightlife Awards. A former clothing factory, the spot takes its name from its Garment District location on West 36th Street. Situated just blocks from Herald Square and the Empire State building, the 15,000 square foot dance club embodies New York City nightlife.
