Bed.lam: noun. A popular name for the hospital also known as Bethlem or St. Mary of Bethlehem in London, which served as a lunatic asylum from ca. 1400; a scene or state of wild uproar and confusion. Bedlam in the East Village: A popular nightspot and winner of Best New Bar/Lounge in Paper Magazine's 7th Annual Nightlife Awards, which also nominated their Saturday nights for Best New Party. One of the coolest-looking bars in New York City, Bedlam boasts carefully-curated decor that evokes the eeriness of the Victorian era (think Jack the Ripper and Edith Wharton) with pages ripped from 19th Century texts for wallpaper and antique medical instruments on display behind the bar. Most surreal of all is their extensive taxidermy collection.
